Compelling Truth

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  The writers of the Declaration of Independence called certain truth “self-evident.” Namely, there is a Creator God who created all men equal.

Allow me to use the term “compelling truth.” This is truth that demands the attention and response of every person.

1) There is a Creator God who made everything. Gen 1:1-3 In Romans 1:18-23 Paul makes the claim that creation reveals the eternal power and divine attributes of God. This is clearly seen and understood by all. Everyone is without excuse. Unfortunately the blindness of sin moves us to suppress the revealed truth of God. Professing to be wise, we have become fools.

2) There really is life after death. Created in the image of God, it is the intent of God for every person to have an eternal relationship with Him. This life is only the beginning of an eternal existence. This has also been revealed to all. The Preacher of Ecclesiastes declared that God has set eternity in our heart. Eccl 3:11 There is evidence to support this. Every culture, on every continent, in every generation includes some acknowledgment of a supreme being and a belief that there is something more…

3) There really is a heaven and a hell. Again, every religion has some sense of accountability to a god. A person is either on good terms with this god or in danger of god’s wrath. Jesus told the parable of a certain rich man and a certain poor man named Lazarus. Luke 16:19-31 When these men died, the rich man went to Hades, and Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom, (the place where Abraham was with God).

4) All of us will stand before God and give an account for our lives. God will determine our eternal destiny and standing. The writer of Hebrews bluntly declares, inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgement. Heb 9:27

These compelling truths demand our attention and our response. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” Ps 14:1 As believers in Christ, these compelling truths should fuel our fires of compassion and conviction. Every person God brings into our life has all of eternity hanging in the balance. “Peace be with you, as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” John 20:21

May the Lord use each of us to be part of a Disciple Making Movement within our sphere of influence.
